My Big Gay Wedding.

I apologize for taking nearly a month to get this out. Mea culpa.

We had a lovely ceremony officiated by Reverend Sheila Kappeler. Sapphocrat’s sister stood up for her, and my two sisters stood up for me. We were so excited as we slipped our wedding bands on each others’ fingers.

Ring exchange

Though that moment when Sheila “By the power vested in me by the state of California I now pronounce you legally married” definitely topped it. Then we were invited to honor each other with a kiss, so of course we did.

First kiss

Legally married, with the rings and wedding certificate to prove it! And from what the experts tell us, no matter what may happen in November, even the Bigot Brigade cannot negate our wedding. We’ll still be married even if Proposition 8 passes.

Of course a wedding must have a cake, and no wedding cake would be complete without a topper. Sapphocrat made this herself. There’s actually a story behind it:

Late last year we drove cross country in my little blue car to get me from the East coast to California. The car had a U-Haul trailer in tow (which isn’t depicted on the cake topper) containing all of my worldly goods. Yes, I know it’s the standard lesbian cliche but what can I say?

And in a very real way that car represents the beginning of our life together, because it brought me to California. To the woman who became my wife. It’s fitting that it was used as the cake topper.

Now we come to the cutting of the cake. If anyone was expecting us to smash cake into each others faces they were disappointed. Neither of us likes that sort of thing.

Then another kiss after we fed each other a bite of cake.

Of course there was dinner, champagne, wine, socializing and so on. It was an amazing night and we ended up going to bed exhausted, well after midnight. We’ll never forget it, to be sure.

Many thanks to (in no particular order):

David’s Bridal.

Joanne, who loaned me the handcrafted jewelry I wore.

Suzanne, who took the fabulous photos.

Shuli, who created the lovely floral arrangements and my bouquet.

And everyone else who helped make our night what it was!
