Certified Hypocrite Award: Chuck Colson
America’s favorite ex-con turned Christofascist morality cop Chuck Colson is at it again. He accuses supporters of marriage equality of engaging in “thug politics“. As are most pieces of it’s nature, it’s heavy on projection and hysteria and nearly devoid of facts.
It began with shouts—foul and violent verbal attacks. Then the assaults became physical. Rioters threw hot coffee on people and began shoving them. One thug yanked a cross out of a woman’s arms and stomped on it. Another grabbed a woman’s Bible, struck her on the head with it, knocked her to the ground, and kicked her. Others engaged in sexual exhibitionism.
I recall those violent verbal attacks and physical assaults. There’s even video of them:
Oops, my error. That’s a video of people who supported Proposition 8 engaging in unprovoked verbal and physical attacks on people who disagreed with them. Let me try again.
D’oh! Wrong again. That was footage of Joseph Storm, who’s going to be standing trial for punching and choking a gay man, as well as beating him with a Yes on 8 sign. Maybe I should forget about the videos for now.
There’s no evidence of any kind for hot coffee being thrown on people or “sexual exhibitionism” and Colson doesn’t link to any news stories to support his ridiculous claims. That’s nothing new with the RRRW as they expect people to just take them at their word (I’m a Man of God–I wouldn’t lie). That’s how they get away with the most preposterous lies. Sorry, no sources means it’s BS.
Now about the Styrofoam Cross Lady. She was no victim in this (not that I condone or encourage violence in any form). She wasn’t just standing in front of her church holding the cross, nor did she merely try to walk by the group of people who were protesting the passage of Proposition 8. She called the media and told them to be there. (They already knew her from her antics at the Palm Springs Gay Pride parade. ) She purposely strode into the crowd of protesters, knocking over a disabled man in the process, and shoved her giant cross in their faces. Did she expect them to invite her for tea and crumpets? No, she was looking for a confrontation so she could play the Persecuted Christian. Of course the fact that she showed up at a second protest, with giant cross in hand, and her blatantly MySpace blog posts, only serve to weaken her pretense of being an innocent victim. She’s nothing more than an anti-gay crusader with an agenda.
When I watched the violence on television, memories came back of earlier generations of thugs: Bull Conner, who, with the help of brutal cops, used violence and intimidation to chase African Americans out of the public square. Or roving gangs of Nazi brownshirts who ruled the streets of Germany during Hitler’s rise to power. Do opponents of Proposition 8 who attacked Mormons and their churches think they’re any better than Bull Conner, or nicer than Nazi thugs? I don’t.
Interesting he should mention Bull Connor. Conner was a member of the KKK and full-out racist. He fought tooth and nail, even resorting to violence, to prevent black people from having the same rights and freedoms as white people. He reminds me very much of certain other anti-equality crusaders.
As to the Nazi comparison, I’ll just remind readers who it is that wants the anti-gay equivalent of the Nuremburg Laws. That would be Colson and friends.
Decent Americans, no matter how they feel about Proposition 8, should be outraged over attempts to frighten and punish those who have every right to speak out—and every right to vote!
We are outraged over attempts to blackmail, threaten , frighten and punish those who dared to stand up to the RRRW lies and manipulations. But of course that makes us the bad guys, because we refuse to simply sit down and STFU like they want us to.
When it became clear that Mormons were being singled out for punishment, religious leaders of every stripe, including me, signed our names to a full-page ad in the New York Times sponsored by the esteemed Becket Fund. It was titled “No Mob Veto.” The signatories included Nathan Diament, Alveda King, William Donahue, and Roger Scruton.
Funny how he whines about Mormons being singled out (when they merely took criticism in proportion to the money and efforts they put into the Yes on 8 campaign) yet doesn’t care one whit that every one of them singled out gay people for the hateful crusade to strip us of our rights. And that ad was complete and total bunk coming from a group that has done nothing but slam the Mormons for being faux-Christian cultists.
The real thugs here are the RRRWers. They are the ones who actively and openly seek to eradicate our rights no matter what it takes. Sadly they’re so unused to anybody seriously taking them to task for their words and actions that they go into a frenzy when it does happen. If they’re looking to stop violence they need to end their crusade to strip us of our rights, and worse. The hateful laws they continually support only foster intolerance and harm to gay people and their families.
But methinks Colson and his ilk don’t care about violence and attacks at all, so long as they’re directed at gay people.
