Doctor George Tiller Shot to Death While Going Into Church. Alleged Killer Arrested.

I don’t like abortion. Who does? The claim that some make, that those who advocate choice are “pro-abortion” is an outright lie. Nobody is pro-abortion. Many people are pro-choice, even though they may not like the idea of abortion itself. I am one of those people.

I would prefer that abortion were never a necessity. I would like it if birth control were so widely available, affordable (free if necessary) and properly used that no woman ever became pregnant unless she wanted to. Were it up to me every child would have age-appropriate comprehensive sex education beginning in middle school. The notion that “just say no–and condoms are evil” will keep them from having sex is as ludicrous as pretending that if you don’t teach your kids to swim and you tell them lifejackets will make them drown they’ll never get in a pool.

Would that eliminate unintended pregnancies? Of course not. But it would drastically reduce them and drop the rate of women seeking abortions to near-zero, which would be a very good thing. Now on to the actual story:

WICHITA, Kan. — George Tiller, a Wichita doctor who was one of the few doctors in the nation to perform late-term abortions, was shot to death on Sunday as he attended church, city officials in Wichita said.

Dr. Tiller, who had performed abortions since the 1970s, had long been a lightning rod for controversy over the issue of abortion, particularly in Kansas, where abortion opponents regularly protested outside his clinic and sometimes his home and church. In 1993, he was shot in both arms by an abortion opponent but recovered.
…..
The shooting occurred at around 10 a.m. (Central time) at Reformation Lutheran Church on the city’s East Side, Dr. Tiller’s regular church.

Wichita police said that the shots were fired from a handgun in the church lobby during the morning service. The authorities gave few details, but said they were searching for a powder blue Taurus made in the 1990s that had been seen leaving shortly after the shooting. They said witnesses had described seeing a white man departing.
…..
Leaders of national abortion rights organizations, meanwhile, expressed outrage. Some described Dr. Tiller as one of the only doctors in the nation who performed third trimester abortions when the life or health of a mother was at stake, and said that his death would make it even harder for women in such circumstances to end their pregnancies.
…..

A suspect, Scott Roederassociated with the group “Operation Rescue”, was later arrested.

…..
Wichita police said that the suspect was arrested without incident on I-35 in Johnson County about three hours after the shooting following a statewide broadcast description of the suspect and the car he was driving.
…..
Police said it appeared Roeder ted alone and that they are are investigating whether he had any connection to anti-abortion groups.

Police on Sunday said they expect the man to face a charge of murder and two counts of aggravated battery.
…..

Roeder has a rather colorful history and needless to say Operation Rescue is in overdrive trying to distance themselves from this event and pretend they’re all about nonviolence. In fact at this time their entire site is down and undoubtedly being scrubbed of any posts by Roeder and possibly even their “Tiller Watch” section. Needless to say it will be quite interesting to see what the police investigation uncovers.

For more on the matter read my lovely wife’s post on the Newswire.

I’m just constantly amazed how some people “of faith” can justify anything by saying they’re doing it in the name of God.
