I’m sure the local citizens can barely contain their excitement, but one of the RRRW’s leading homophobes will be paying them a visit this weekend for his annual visit to the Folsom Street Fair. Now Peter claims to despise this horrifically depraved event, but considering the amount of space he devotes to it on his site–not to mention the amount of time he spends at it photographing participants–I rather think The lady doth protest too much. At any rate, he’s put out a news release about his upcoming weekend visit to SF.

Right. Of course in between the Friday and Monday press events Peter will be following men around with cameras so he can go back with plenty of pictures for his usual “look at all of these naked men isn’t this awful these gay people are so sick sick sick” post.

I wonder why it is that Peter never posts any pictures of the many women and straight couples who attend the FSF. Perhaps he doesn’t even take any. Maybe somebody could ask him about that if they run into him this weekend.

A father in Nampa, OH kicked and screamed until his public library removed The Joy of Sex and The Joy of Gay Sex from the shelves. Thankfully the ACLU stepped in and demanded the books be put back on the shelves. Predictably the wingnuts are having the vapors over it.

…..Fischer says the ACLU’s argument against removing the books is unfounded. “They argued that the policy violated the First Amendment’s freedom-of-speech provision,” he points out. “But this is clearly in error of the founding fathers. When they enacted the First Amendment [they] intended to protect political speech, not pornography.”

Those books are not pornography, though I’m not surprised people like Fischer can’t discern the difference. Furthermore the First Amendment protects far more than political speech, it protects all manner of speech. That’s exactly why every RRRW Christian screams “Freedom of Speech” whenever pressed about the hateful nonsense they spew against others (which is typically preceded or followed by “Freedom of Religion”).

He also argues that the “bullying tactics” employed by the ACLU are typical of that group in its efforts to “trash community values” with threats of an expensive lawsuit. “It’s an abysmal state of affairs when a single letter from cultural thugs can undo two years of patient and pain-staking work…,” he laments.

I’m sure he knows all about bullying tactics. Those are what he and his ilk use to try to force librarians to take “objectionable” material out of libraries, among other things. Funny how they can’t simply choose not to borrow and read the materials, but feel the need to censor them entirely. How typical.

Now I come to the opposite end of their spectrum, and that name that seems to be popping up quite a bit here lately: Peter LaBarbera. Peter is asking people to help place “ex-gay” books in their local libraries. It even includes a long list of suggested titles.

So that’s how it is. They demand that any library materials that are by and for the LGBT audience be removed as “offensive” and throw tantrums if their efforts are thwarted. Yet at the same time they want to be able to flood the libraries with “ex-gay” propaganda.

Then they wonder why some people consider them lying hypocrites.

 

If you’ve been reading the Newswire or Truth Wins Out you’re no doubt aware that Wayne Besen is traveling to Alaska today. He’ll be fighting the lies spread by Focus on the Family at their Love Won Out conference in Anchorage.

Of course Peter LaBarbera, of Americans for (the distortion of) Truth had to put his spin on the matter.

Homosexual gadfly Wayne Besen is begging for money to fly to Alaska to embarrass Gov. Sarah Palin and promote the lie that homosexuals cannot change. And Associated Press is happy to parrot Besen’s line ridiculing healthy change for homosexuals.

The lie that homosexuals cannot change? Who exactly is lying here? Let’s see. According to all reputable professional organizations and members of such:

“The most important fact about ‘reparative therapy,’ also sometimes known as ‘conversion’ therapy, is that it is based on an understanding of homosexuality that has been rejected by all the major health and mental health professions. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of Social Workers, together representing more than 477,000 health and mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus there is no need for a ‘cure.’

“…health and mental health professional organizations do not support efforts to change young people’s sexual orientation through ‘reparative therapy’ and have raised serious concerns about its potential to do harm.” 11

The primer includes a number of quotations from major professional organizations about reparative therapy and other methods of attempting to change individual’s sexual orientation. One example is the American Academy of Pediatrics, which stated: “Therapy directed specifically at changing sexual orientation is contraindicated, since it can provoke guilt and anxiety while having little or no potential for achieving changes in orientation.” 11

There is no such thing as “healthy change for homosexuals”. It involves methods that cause psychological, spiritual and even physical harm. Furthermore in the majority of cases no actual change occurs, particularly in the long term, despite the claims of the organizations that tout the “reparative therapy”.

AP also quotes New York City-based homosexual gadfly Wayne Besen: “’I think gay Republicans are going to run away’ if Palin supports efforts like the prayers to convert gays.” Oh well, there go 379 homosexual activist Republican votes for McCain – while millions of pro-family, Sarah-Palin-loving Republicans applaud ministries that offer godly, healthy change to homosexual strugglers.

I’m sure many of them do. Some of them are deluded into thinking the “ministries” are truly helpful to gay people, and some of them can’t see past their hatred of gay people to care how much they harm them. As long as gay people stop acting gay and pretend they’re straight to please God and the Christians that’s all that matters to these people. And do any of theses people, including Peter LaBarbera, ever consider how few “Homosexual Strugglers” there would be if it weren’t for the hideous amounts of bigotry some Christians heap upon them in our society? Then again, I think they like it that way, and rather wish there were more.

But Professional Anti-Christian Activist Besen is not deterred. Oblivious to the thousands of former homosexuals worldwide who live happy lives shorn of their false “gay “identity, he is now begging his followers for money so he can fly to Anchorage to protest a “Love Won Out” conference promoted by Wasilla Bible Church and sponsored by Focus on the Family. LWO conferences – a favorite target of homosexual militants and anti-“Christianists” everywhere — feature “born again” former homosexuals sharing their hopeful testimonies.

I’m sure Peter already knows it–though he’ll never admit it–but most of those “born again former homosexuals” are nothing more than repressed gays who go right back to being gay shortly after the conference. If they actually ever stopped in the first place. Just because you pretend you aren’t gay to please bigots and their god doesn’t make you straight. It makes you a repressed gay person living a lie.

Special message to Peter: If Wayne doesn’t have enough to get back from Alaska I’ll gladly advance him the money. It’s well worth charging up my credit card for that. And I don’t buy that blurb at the bottom of your article where you claim it’s a spoof.

Somehow I don’t think Hallmark is going to be too disappointed, particularly if they ever discover who Peter is. In case you’re not familiar with the backstory, Hallmark is now offering gay marriage cards. Of course Peter couldn’t possibly let any company do something positive for gay people without raising a stink so he dashed off a letter expressing his consternation, and recommended to all of his bigot friends that they do the same.

Maybe we should return the favor and whine to any greeting card company that offers cards to Christians. Can’t have anybody promoting “The Christian Agenda” by offering them greeting cards, can we?

I think I’m going to go out and buy some Hallmark cards this weekend just to cheese off the bigots. That means you and your friends, Peter.

 

Because if it were, I’d be thinking like a fundie and making convoluted statements like the ones in this story about the ongoing McDonald’s boycott from WorldNutDaily.

The corporate headquarters for McDonald’s is hearing from store managers in California that customers are upset over the company’s pro-homosexual advocacy and they aren’t going to take it any longer.

Yeah, because it would be unheard of for you to tolerate any organization that didn’t practice bigotry toward LGBT people, wouldn’t it?

It was because of a decision by the restaurant chain known for Happy Meals and its Golden Arches to deliberately advocate for homosexuality. The company has given $20,000 to the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and placed one of its executives on that group’s board. The NGLCC, among other things, lobbies for same-sex “marriage” provisions.

So by giving to the NGLCC McDonald’s is advocating for homosexuality? I guess then by giving to the Salvation Army McDonald’s is advocating for Christianity, and by giving to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength McDonald’s is advocating breast cancer. No, I didn’t misstate that last one, because if supporting rights and benefits for LGBT people means advocating homosexuality, then donating to an agency that seeks a cure for breast cancer surely means advocating breast cancer. Just twist your brain into a pretzel and it will all become clear to you.

“If McDonald’s restaurants and franchises … follow the small business advice of the company’s new homosexual partner – the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), which received a $20,000 grant from McDonald’s – there would be chaos,” said Peter LaBarbera, chief of Americans for Truth.

The only chaos that’s occurring is because of bigoted hate-mongers who can’t stand the idea of LGBT people having equal rights and protections under the law, and feel the need to bully any organization that tries to offer them.

“From customers, we’ve actually gotten a pretty good response. They see the signs and come up to us. When they ask, we just explain about the $20,000 donated to the NGLCC.”

I notice they left out the part where most of the customers walked away shaking their heads and rolling their eyes.

McDonalds’ personal attack against those who support the traditional definition of marriage, while siding with a narrow group that promotes a radical redefinition, shows that company executives are out to lunch. McDonalds might as well change their signs to read ‘billions and billions insulted,’” said Mathew Staver, chief of Liberty Counsel.

“This boycott isn’t about hiring homosexuals, or homosexuals eating at McDonald’s or how homosexual employees are treated. It is about McDonald’s, as a corporation, refusing to remain neutral in the culture war. The company has chosen not to remain neutral but to give the full weight of their corporation to promoting the homosexual agenda, including homosexual marriage,” the AFA said.

Yes, it’s a personal attack against you because McDonald’s won’t engage in bigotry against LGBT citizens. And you don’t want them to remain “neutral in the culture war”, you want them to support your side. But nice attempt to claim otherwise.

The pro-family groups are encouraging families to do two things: sign, print and distribute a Boycott McDonald’s petition at www.boycottmcdonalds.com; and call the local McDonald’s to politely tell the manager they are boycotting the chain until it stops promoting the “gay” agenda.

Yes, but they should promote the homophobic bigot agenda instead? Right.

I’ve got a suggestion for anybody who can’t handle the fact that McDonald’s doesn’t pander to homophobes. Head on down to In n’ Out Burger. They have Bible verses on their food wrappers so they’re right up your alley.

 

I have a grab-bag of articles that will have you reaching for the anti-emetics. The first comes from Truth Wins Out regarding Stephen Black’s support of Sally Kern at the recent Rally for Sally.

Black is the executive director of First Stone Ministries, an Oklahoma-based Exodus member “ministry.”

A point-by-point analysis of Black’s speech finds appeals to conformity, false and unsourced statistics, and sweeping dehumanization of sexual strugglers. Instead of healing strugglers and reuniting families, Black’s rhetoric divides families and alienates Americans whom he has falsely maligned.

The entire article is a must-read and contains many more important links. Next up are fundie-wingnuts having fits over a school event that asks kids to dress as the opposite gender. Apparently they think it will give kids Teh Gay or make them transgender much like standing next to tall people makes them tall.

Students at Pineview Elementary had been dressing in costume all last week as part of an annual school tradition called Wacky Week. On Friday, students were encouraged to dress either as senior citizens or as members of the opposite sex.

A local resident informed the Voice of Christian Youth America on Friday. The Milwaukee-based radio network responded by interrupting its morning programming for a special broadcast that aired on nine radio stations throughout Wisconsin. The broadcast criticized the dress-up day and accused the district of promoting alternative lifestyles.

“We believe it’s the wrong message to send to elementary students,” said Jim Schneider, the network’s program director. “Our station is one that promotes traditional family values. It concerns us when a school district strikes at the heart and core of the Biblical values. To promote this to elementary-school students is a great error.”

The theme for Friday’s dress-up day came from students, Hayes said. The Wacky Week schedule was created by Pineview’s Student Senate with the guidance of secretary Shari Miller.

About 40 percent of the student body dressed up Friday, Hayes estimated, with half portraying senior citizens and half dressing as the opposite sex.

Kids mocking senior citizens is A-OK. Dressing up like the opposite sex is a crime against nature and “traditional family values”, which apparently means hating anybody who is different than you.

I now move on to the first news regarding my dear “friend” Peter LaBarbera. Queerty reports:

This from a man who uses his influence to spread blatantly biased spread gay panic and supports Sally Kern, the politician who called non-Christians “infidels” and equated gays with terrorists? Who’s even-handed?

Notice how homosexuals always “practice” homosexuality no matter how long they’ve been gay, yet heterosexuals never “practice” it even during their first experience? And since when has Peter LaBarbera ever given a moment’s care or thought to “even handed” portrayal of anything?

Next Petey spews his hatred and ignorance on Thomas Beatie. Frankly I’m surprised it took this long.

News out of Bend, Oregon is that male resident, Thomas Beatie, is 22 weeks pregnant. Articles have been written and an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show is scheduled. Looking closer, news of a Pregnant “Man” is just a myth.

Thomas Beatie, the Bend, Oregon man making news as a “Pregnant Man” was born Tracy LaGondino, a woman, 34 years ago. Tracy was a lesbian who fought for the right of gay couples to adopt children and against hate crimes in Hawaii, before moving to Bend 2 years ago.

Tracy fell in love with another woman, Nancy Roberts in Hawaii and they desired to be married, strictly against even Hawaii’s liberal laws.

Tracy decided she should obtain a sex change because Hawaii’s laws did not support same sex [”marriage.”] She underwent a double radical mastectomy and began hormone therapy to change her gender to that of a male, but keeping her female reproductive organs.

I guess Peter has doesn’t understand that a gay person can also be transsexual, and vice-versa. Some minds are just too narrow for their (and our) own good.

Finally, Petey is wringing his hands because Oklahoman Editor Ed Kelley doesn’t love Sally Kern as much as he and her other rabid supporters do.

More arrogance from the liberal media below — in this case, on online voiced editorial by Daily Oklahoman Editor Ed Kelley. Of course, Kelley is free to leave journalism and become a political activist — which does not seem like much of a transition after reading this. Perhaps he could even run for office on the “real issues” he talks about below. That would take a lot of work, especially if he’s as out of touch with Oklahoma’s voters as it appears.

Nope, it’s much easier for Kelley to whine about the people whom his newspaper is supposed to serve and respect. On the day that the “Rally for Sally” drew 1,500 or more people to the capital — to defend a decent, Christian woman who was the target of a national homosexual campaign — Kelley’s paper ran a condescending (and inaccurate) editorial that ended, “Perhaps constituents ought to hold a rally of their own, urging this one-trick pony to put her tiresome personal agenda aside and work to do something constructive.”

Interesting Peter should comment about the people Kelley’s paper is supposed to serve and respect. Sally Kern certainly wasn’t thinking about the people she was supposed to serve and respect when she went on her vile, homophobic rant several months ago. She didn’t consider her LGBT constituents, their friends, their families or their allies, nor did she consider the LGBT children of her constituents. But then those citizens don’t seem to be of much import to the likes of Sally Kern or Peter LaBarbera except as political footballs and fundraising tools.

Well, that’s as much as I can handle for now without a hefty dose of Pepto-Bismol. I think I’ll go read something more cheerful like 1984 or Ethan Frome .

Addendum. A comment has arrived regarding Thomas Beatie. Ebon said.

Here’s a prediction: In about ten or twelve years, Mr. Beatie’s child will either be completely average in virtually every way and therefore be ignored by the RW or (probably a few years later) he will have been so poisoned against his parents that he will give speeches about how terrible they were and the RW will laud him.

I don’t know whether her (it seems the baby is to be a girl) parents plan to tell her that her father is transgender but even if they don’t I’m sure she’ll find out. I hope that the bigots don’t ruin things for her because I’m sure she’ll be loved and treated well at home. Who knows, maybe things will be very different for LGBT people and their families in another 10-15 years–but I’m not holding my breath.

 

By now most of you have heard Sally Kern’s hateful homophobic rant, the transcript of which you can read here. Sally has refused to apologize, refused to meet with protesters and refused to admit she did anything wrong. But now she’s teamed up with the worst of the RRRW homophobes to fight back against those who are protesting against her hate speech. Enter Peter LaBarbera. No longer content to be a mere Concerned Woman for America, Peter decided to indulge full-time in his obsession with gays in a spinoff organization, Americans for (the distortion of) Truth.

Anyway, Peter has posted on his Website some e-mails allegedly forwarded to him by Sally Kern. Allegedly these e-mails were sent to her by angry gay people after they heard her tirade. If they’re real I would think they would be evidence in an ongoing law-enforcement investigation and therefore forwarding them to others would not be legal, and plastering them on a public Website like AFT would be very inappropriate. But then again this is the RRRW we’re talking about here so I am highly skeptical about the validity of any of this to begin with.

Nonetheless I’ll proceed here and just assume that the e-mails in question might be genuine. Otherwise this post won’t go anywhere from here. That being said, let’s move on. ***Warning. It seems that when threats are directed at gay people they’re merely expressions of God’s Word, but otherwise they’re “hate speech”–particularly if they’re directed at Christians. Nothing new here, keep moving.

Again, I in no way condone threats of any nature against anybody. But people like Sally Kern and Peter LaBarbera need to recognize what they say and do is hate speech, not merely expression of religious beliefs. What they say has significant and harmful effects on people. Until they do no progress will be made.
