The District will become the first city in the United States to distribute female condoms free, part of a project that will make 500,000 of them available in beauty salons, convenience stores and high schools in parts of the city with high HIV rates.

The move is an official acknowledgment of the futility of relying solely on the use of male condoms, which have been distributed citywide for nearly a decade, to stem the District’s epidemic of HIV and AIDS. Officials said they are turning to female condoms to give women more power to protect themselves from HIV and sexually transmitted diseases when their partners refuse to use protection.

“Anywhere male condoms are available, female condoms will be available,” said Shannon Hader, director of the D.C. HIV/AIDS Administration. “We’re not saying that if you’re a school in this area, you can’t get female condoms. We’re trying to make every effort count to build on what already exists . . . to expand options rather than limit them.”

Hader thought of HIV/AIDS “hot spots” identified in the HIV Heterosexual Behavior Study, which was released in tandem with the epidemiological report. In the behavior study, 75 percent of participants said they were in committed relationships. But nearly half, 46 percent, said they thought their last sexual partner had had sex outside the relationship. And nearly half, 45 percent, said they had had sex outside the relationship.

Activists say poor women often are reluctant to protest when their husbands and boyfriends refuse to use male condoms because they are dependent on the man’s income.

Definitely a good move for D.C. Now it’s up to women to take advantage of it and protect themselves.

 

Apparently bigotry trumps family for some allegedly “pro-family” types. Catholic Charities in D.C., the same folks who ended their foster care program over the pending law that legalizes same-sex marriage, will now cease providing health care benefits to employee’s spouses lest they be required to give them to one with Teh Gay.

The Archdiocese of Washington has been battling the D.C. government for the right to discriminate against gays and lesbians since D.C.’s same-sex marriage legislation got rolling last year.

One major point of contention: Once gays and lesbians are allowed to marry, the Archdiocese—which employs plenty of locals through Catholic Charities—will be required to provide health benefits to same-sex spouses, an act which it says would fly in the face of the Catholic church’s teachings on homosexuality.

The solution? No spousal benefits for anybody.

I wonder why Catholic Charities isn’t whining about the fact that they’re already providing health care benefits to gay people. It’s obvious they know they have gay and lesbian employees by the fact that they’re instituting this ridiculous and hateful policy. Why aren’t they demanding their right to refuse to provide benefits to these employees? It would be a natural extension of their “religious freedoms” after all. Then again, I probably shouldn’t give them any ideas….

Here’s the memo:

I am writing to you to inform you of an important change to our group health care benefit plan that will take effect on March 2, 2010 due to a change in the law of the District of Columbia. It is important to note that the existing health coverage of current employees will not be affected by the change. New employees and current employees requesting revisions in benefit coverage will be affected by this change.

Catholic Charities will continue to honor the health plan coverage that current employees have as of March 1, 2010. As of March 2, a new plan will be in effect that will cover new employees and requests for benefit changes by current employees. …..

We sincerely regret that we have to make this change, but it is necessary to allow Catholic Charities to continue to provide essential services to the clients we serve in partnership with the District of Columbia while remaining consistent with the tenets of our religious faith.

Actually if Catholic Charities were truly remaining consistent with the tenets of their religious faith they would be denying benefits to the divorced and anybody who’d had premarital sex, among others. But they choose to target gay people and pretend they’re just upholding their religious tenets while they ignore all of the other “sinners” in their employ.

Ultimately Catholic Charities will screw hundreds, even thousands, of straight people in their quest to stick it to the gays. Once again they prove they aren’t about charity but instead about pushing their personal flavor of religion on everyone. This is yet another reason I detest such organizations receiving any taxpayer money. If they’re going to push their arbitrary religious dogma on employees and/or service recipients they don’t deserve a penny of support from the very people they are harming in the process.

 

Of course they’re already being held up as martyrs, as were their MA counterparts before them. But the plain fact is that Catholic Charities chose to end its foster care program in DC, just as CC in MA chose to cease adoption services in MA, because they didn’t want to obey laws every other agency is subject to. Nobody “forced” them to do anything.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington has ended its 80-year-old foster-care program in the District rather than license same-sex couples, the first fallout from a bitter debate over the city’s move to legalize same-sex marriage.

Catholic Charities, which runs more than 20 social service programs for the District, transferred its entire foster-care program — 43 children, 35 families and seven staff members — to another provider, the National Center for Children and Families. Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6), the D.C. Council member who chairs the Committee on Human Services, said he didn’t know of any problems with the transfer, which happened Feb. 1.

So that’s that. Despite former threats that children would be left wandering the streets and DC would implode because of Teh Gays, the entire caseload is already being served by another agency. Granted it’s another “faith based” provider, but I suppose I can’t expect perfection. At the very least they show no overt signs of being as bigoted as their CC counterparts.

Edward Orzechowski, president and chief executive of Catholic Charities, the archdiocese’s social service arm, said the group is optimistic that it will find a way to structure its benefits packages in other social service programs so that it can remain in partnership with the city without recognizing same-sex marriage.

Asked if that meant looking at ways to avoid paying benefits to same-sex partners or ways to write benefits plans so as not to characterize same-sex couples as “married,” Orzechowski said “both, and.”

Translation: Catholic Charities wants to flaunt the law and still keep taking taxpayer dollars–including those of the people whose rights they’re directly violating. So much for the “moral values” instilled by religion.

 

Of course the anti-gays are

Same-sex couples won the right to marry in the nation’s capital Tuesday when the District of Columbia City Council voted 11-2 to pass a measure sponsored by openly gay council member David Catania. Congress has 30 days to review the law before it takes effect, but Congressional leaders have already agreed not to block the law’s adoption.

The bigots are screaming for their “God-given right” to vote away the rights of a minority but D.C. previously rejected all the clamoring for one. Hopefully they’ll stick to their guns.

The Board of Elections and Ethics in Washington D.C. ruled Tuesday that allowing a same-sex ‘marriage’ ban on the ballot would violate the city’s Human Rights Act of 1977. On Wednesday, the organization, Stand4MarriageDC filed a lawsuit against the board saying it is denying D.C. citizens the right to vote on the definition of marriage.

Board of Elections Chairman Errol R. Arthur said in a statement on Tuesday that “laws of the District of Columbia preclude us from allowing this initiative to move forward” and that the initiative “would authorize discrimination prohibited under the [District’s] Human Rights Act.”

Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America, also weighed in on the situation. “The D.C. Council reeks of rank hypocrisy. For years they have demanded that D.C. citizens should have the right to vote for congressional representation, which is in direct contradiction to the Constitution. Yet now they are denying D.C. citizens the right to vote on marriage, an institution so fundamental to America’s well-being that territories were not allowed to become states unless they kept marriage between one man and one woman,” she said in a press release on Nov 18.

I know, Wendy, voting on the human rights of others is a time honored American tradition. That’s why you’ve offered yours up for the next election, right?

If only the rest of the nation would learn from D.C. millions of dollars would be saved, and many millions of families would protected.

 

A number of radical anti-gay wingnuts showed up in D.C. on Monday to preach anti-gay twaddle from the Bible under the premise that the recently passed Matthew Shepard Act was going to lead to widespread arrests of clergy who were merely “preaching the Bible”. They came, they grandstanded, they preached the Bible, and…..not a whole lot more. Well, at least not the big publicity stunt they were likely hoping for–that being them being dragged off in handcuffs by the police so they could be martyrs for their hateful “faith”. The tables were turned on them in an amusing way, however:

Anything other than sex “between a male and his wedded wife,” announced the Rev. Paul Blair, “is a perversion, and the Bible says that homosexuality is in fact an abomination.”

No arrest was made.

The Rev. Rick Scarborough, quoting Scripture, listed “homosexual offenders” along with thieves, drunkards, swindlers and idolators as those unwelcome in the kingdom of God. “To fail to call homosexuals to repent of their sin and come to Jesus is the highest form of cowardice and sin,” he said.

No charges were filed.

“Had people listened to our plea, there would be tens of thousands of people who had not died of a dreaded disease,” contributed the Rev. Jim Garlow. “This breaks our heart to see people die of AIDS.”

No hands were cuffed. In fact, the few cops in attendance were paying no attention to the speakers, instead talking among themselves and checking their BlackBerrys.

Instead of getting arrested, the ministers got something else: A couple of dozen gay activists, surrounding them with rainbow flags and signs announcing “Gaga for Gay Rights” and “I Am a Love Warrior.” By the end, the gay rights activists had taken over the lectern and the sound system and were holding their own news conference denouncing the ministers.

Cass turned angrily to the AV guy. “We’re not on the clock, are we?” He turned with equal anger to Valk. “You guys gonna help us pay for the microphones?”

The gay activist smiled. “God,” he said, “works in mysterious ways.”

In this case, God took the form of Chuck Fazio, from DC Podiums. Fazio was hired by the religious conservatives to provide the sound system for the event, but upon learning of their cause, he decided to donate his proceeds to the gay rights activists and to give them a chance at the microphone before shutting down the amplifiers. “I don’t want bad karma,” he explained, noting with some pride that the lectern they were using was the same one used by Borat on a recent Washington visit.

“Preachers will soon be targeted for prosecution, and their speech will be monitored,” Scarborough warned.

But there was no evidence of persecution at the corner of 10th and Pennsylvania. In fact, the cops at one point intervened to help the ministers, by ordering the gay rights activists to move away.

So I guess the Matthew Shepard Act didn’t outlaw the Bible or Christianity after all. Could it be the RRRWers were…lying?

 

The Catholic Church is apparently not content with keeping its own members submissive to its dogma. Now its blackmailing the District of Columbia, threatening to stop providing social services unless D.C. reverses its decision to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn’t change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.

Of course if they do, we’ll hear for the next decade about how they were “forced to stop providing services because of gay marriage” (much like we’ve been hearing about how Catholic Charities in MA was “forced to stop providing adoption services in MA because of gay marriage”). We’ll hear that instead of the truth–they willingly chose to cease providing services rather than dump their personal bigotries toward LGBT citizens.

Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city.

“If the city requires this, we can’t do it,” Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said Wednesday. “The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that’s really a problem.”

No, Susan, it doesn’t mean you have to “be secular”. It just means you have to follow the same anti-discrimination laws everyone else does when providing services with taxpayer funds. If you want to operate solely according to your “deeply held religious beliefs” perhaps you should ditch those taxpayer dollars (which include funds from gay people, atheists, Pagans, Satanists and all sorts of other people you’d love to refuse to work with) and pass that church collection plate a few more times.

“The problem with the individual exemption is anybody could discriminate based on their assertion of religious principle,” Mendelson said. “There were many people back in the 1950s and ’60s, during the civil rights era, that said separation of the races was ordained by God.”

Indeed. And if we were to ban everything somebody’s “deeply held religious beliefs” and/or god said was wrong nothing would be legal. We can no longer allow human rights to be denied because one religious group or another objects. And we can no longer permit moral grandstanding by bigots to impede progress.

If the Catholic Church wants to pull the plug on its social service programs because it hates LGBT people then let it. There are plenty more providers to come in and take their place–providers who won’t be serving up a heap of smug superiority and bigotry with their services.

 

The anti-gay bigots screamed, tantrumed and rended their garments for the longest time before the Matthew Shepard Act passed. The notion that people might suffer a stiffer penalty for targeting a person because of their gender, sexual orientation (be it heterosexual or homosexual), gender identity (transgender or cisgender) or disability appears to conflict with the “religious values” of some. In fact, there’s going to be a rally over it on November 16th.

Some people are so agitated over the Matthew Shepard Act that they’re going to hold a “Rally for Religious Freedom”.

The Rally for Religious Freedom is meant to raise alarm over the nation’s new Federal “hate crimes” law just passed by Congress and signed last month by President Obama. The intention of the rally is to assert the freedom of speech of ministers and Christians in general to declare biblical truth in the public square.

They’ve been doing that for years. Do we really need another rally over this nonsense? No pastor has ever been arrested for preaching the Bible and none ever will. The Matthew Shepard Act is about violent actions, not speech. When will these nitwits get that through their heads?

Ministers from various denominations will preach from the Bible, especially those parts that speak to the sin of homosexuality. This will serve to reassure ministers and Christians that they are free to do the same.

In other words, this rally is just another excuse to engage in anti-gay speech and grandstanding while pretending “Christians” are being persecuted. Par for the course. But here’s a little pre-rally experiment. I’ll post those Clobber Verses right here.

I won’t be holding my breath waiting for the law enforcement officials to knock down my door to arrest me for a Hate Crime. Despite what the whiny bigots like to claim, the law does not address speech/words. It addresses actions. They could stand and read the entire Bible if they wanted and nothing would happen to them under the MSA. But that fact won’t stop them from pretending they’ve been thrown in a gulag and sentenced to bread crusts and tainted water for the rest of their lives by this law.

As to the bigots and their little rally, are they really going to just stand around reading anti-gay Bible verses and whining about how “persecuted” they are because Teh Gays now have hate crimes protections just like they do? Or are they going to really push things to the limit–even engage in violent acts against LGBT people–so they can really play the martyrs? Only time will tell. One thing I hope is that there are plenty of video cameras at this event so we don’t have to take their word for anything, because they are notorious liars.
