Help Wanted: “Leaders” for the RRRW

Friday, March 14th, 2008

DobsonJames Dobson fears that the Christian wrong Right will be left without leaders soon if no new blood rises up to take over. The current crop is rapidly aging, dying or falling away in myriad scandals.

James Dobson told a group of Christian broadcasters Tuesday night that the passing of Jerry Falwell, the Rev. D. James Kennedy and Ruth Bell Graham represent the end of an era.

The radio talk show host noted that others like Billy Graham, Chuck Colson, Pat Robertson and Chuck Swindoll will also soon pass from the scene, and questioned the impact on the conservative Christian church.

“It causes me to wonder who will be left to carry the banner when this generation of leaders is gone,” Dobson told an audience of nearly 1,400 at the National Religious Broadcasters conference. “The question is, will the younger generation heed the call? Who will defend the unborn child in the years to come? Who will plead for the Terri Schiavos of the world? Who’s going to fight for the institution of marriage, which is on the ropes today.”

Who will fight for the unborn children? When will they start fighting for the born children? They pour millions of dollars into fighting against LGBT rights, build exorbitant mega-churches, and are unashamedly pro-war (which costs millions per day). All of that money would go far to support the children they claim they’re so ardently fighting to protect. Sadly they don’t seem to care about children, but only fetuses.

As to marriage, their only advice for protecting marriage is to keep same-sex couples from reaping the joys and rights of it. Letting same-sex couples marry, they insist, would “destroy traditional marriage” Therefore it must be prohibited. Funny how they don’t suggest banning adultery, which is prohibited by the 7th Commandment, or divorce, which is forbidden several times in the Bible (including by Jesus himself). Adultery and divorce do more to destroy heterosexual marriage than any same-sex marriage could ever do. It seems that anything that requires sacrifice by them, rather than restricting others, is verboten.

Christian activists and other observers of the movement say that the next generation of leaders isn’t as interested in polarizing debates and wants to broaden the evangelical agenda beyond divisive issues like abortion and gay marriage.

“Who in the next generation will be willing to take the heat, when it’s so much safer and more comfortable to avoid controversial subjects,” Dobson said. “What will be the impact on the conservative Christian church when the patriarchs have passed?”

Hey, maybe they’ll think about using their religion to guide their own lives instead of using it as a weapon to beat others over the head with. What a novel idea that would be. It’s obvious Dobson can’t wrap his tiny, hateful little brain around that, however.

Dobson, 71, said many of his comments on Tuesday were the same he made at Kennedy’s funeral last fall, when he told those in attendance he’s praying that the next generation of Christians will answer God’s call to take up the mantle of leadership.

Since Dobson is so insistent that the “mantle of leadership” be taken up by people of his own ilk, maybe I can come up with some suggestions. How about that nice David Hyles? Oh, that’s right–he was accused of having child porn, having extramarital sex with 19 members of his church and possibly killing a child. Never mind.

What about Paul Crouch? He’s into that Prosperity Gospel stuff, and the RRRW really loves their money. Ooopsie, there are those nasty allegations of extramarital gay sex with an employee and subsequent attempt to pay the guy off. Forget him.

What about Ted Haggard…oh, right. Andy Beith is out of action until 2009. It will probably be another 38 years before Russel Hirner is preaching to anybody but his fellow prisoners.

I hear Jim Bakker was sprung though. I’m sure he’s looking for work. Right about now I think he’s the best thing the RRRW is going to get. They shoudl probably jump on it. If all else fails I’m sure the Duggars will spawn at least one potential heir to the throne from their ever-growing brood.
